Graph databases serve as a powerful NoSQL complement to relational databases. Graph bootcamp is a lab-based graph systems workshop that teaches students how to model domains as graphs/networks and solve domain-specific problems using graph traversals. It is all about intense, heads-down development: light on one-to-many lecturing and heavy on coding, solution discovery, and fast feedback.

More information at: http://markorodriguez.com/services/workshops/graph-bootcamp/

Who should attend? All developers can gain value from attending, especially if you've been solving data modeling exclusively through relational databases. The exercises will be based in Java and Groovy, so experience in these languages will be an advantage. Of course, we'll be here to help you with the languages. Moreover, much of the tutorial examples will be in Gremlin.

What will you learn? Quite simply, you'll learn in one day what would otherwise take weeks. You'll start seeing the edges and vertices all around you. You'll be comfortable with taking your domain model from the whiteboard to a graph database (e.g. Neo4j, OrientDB, etc.). You will learn how to use Gremlin, the emerging standard in graph query languages, to traverse and update your graph. You will learn how to test your graph in unit and functional tests. In the end, you will learn what it takes to build a graph solution.

What you will leave with? You will walk away knowing a graph problem when you see one, along with an understanding of the tools used by the experts to solve such problems. In short, you will understand how to effectively apply the graph traversal pattern.

What should you bring? Make sure to come with a laptop with Java 1.6+ installed and preferably an IDE. Graph bootcamp will provide you a USB stick that includes code, data sets, and documentation. We will work from this code base to develop solutions to common graph-related problems.

As a graph systems consultant, Dr. Marko A. Rodriguez works with organizations to help them understand the graph space and apply its ecosystem of technologies to solving real-world problems. No longer are graphs relegated to mathematical inquiry. Marko applies this previously underutilized, fundamental data structure to numerous engineering problems. Marko's background includes being a Director's Fellow at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and a Graph Systems Architect at AT&T.

Bobby Norton is a systems architect and avid graph user. Over the last 13 years, he has built fingerprint identification systems at Lockheed Martin, space shuttle flight simulators at NASA, a continuous integration server at ThoughtWorks, and enterprise information systems at DRW Trading. Bobby has delivered numerous training sessions on design patterns and object-oriented programming and has presented at international conferences including Agile 200X, OOPSLA, and SpeakerConf.
